Founded in 1879 by Thomas J. McGowan in the Village of Haverstraw, the business has operated under continuous family stewardship across multiple generations. Thomas J. McGowan Jr. assumed management of the firm in 1923 following his father's death; Francis Patrick McGowan, grandson of the founder, later served as a licensed funeral director and owner of multiple T.J. McGowan Sons locations across Rockland County, including Haverstraw and Garnerville. The current facility on Broadway was purpose-built in 1975 as a dedicated deathcare facility measuring 6,444 square feet, occupying a lot within the original 19th-century footprint of Haverstraw Village — the community historically recognized as the global center of brick manufacturing during the 1800s and early 1900s.


The facility includes a chapel, identification viewings, and private viewings. This location does not offer an on-site cemetery, on-site crematory, or pet cremation. Licensed grief therapy and legal or estate planning services are not available at this location.

During one of the most difficult moments for our family, TJ McGowan Funeral Home staff Rosalinda Hammer and their incredible funeral director Carl Horn treated us with kindness, compassion, and professionalism. They handled my mother’s burial with great care and dignity, making sure every detail was taken care of beautifully. Carl even drove my father’s cremated remains along with my mom’s to the cemetery to be buried together. Making possible a promise i had made to both of them. For that I am deeply grateful for the care and compassion you showed our family. Even Julie has written to us offering their grief support platform services. I highly recommend T J McGowan services to anyone looking for a funeral home that truly cares for families and honors loved ones with dignity and compassion.

Rosalinda Hamer is wonderful. Honestly I can't say enough. I'm an old guy still struggling with the loss of my wife. Every year I place a memorial in the Journal News but it has become extremely difficult to navigate the process. I called McGowans to see if someone could help me. In steps this angel named Rosalinda. Kind, compassionate and understanding. Helps me every year now. God bless you honey for helping me honor my wife's memory. 🙏

Would recommend 10/10 times. My father had passed and they made it so easy, and beautiful for me during this tough time. Carl and Rosa were so helpful and considerate during this process. Carl even DROVE me to be able to say one last goodbye before cremation. They are attentive, available always at short notice, and kind and nothing but respectful, they also buried my grandmother, grandfather, great grandmother, and great uncle. I couldn’t have been more satisfied with their handling, thank you TJ McGowen!
