Mementos

On the morning of January 3, 2020, Carol Evelyn Vandertie passed away peacefully and joined the Lord as they walked side by side into her glorious heavenly garden. Anyone who loved Carol knew she was more than ready to make her heavenly journey. She would often quote Psalms 31:15: "Our times are in His hands,” and Acts 17:28: "For in Him we live and move and have our being.” Carol is preceded in heaven by her parents Gladys and Henry Sharner and her brother Lloyd Sharner. She is survived by her two older brothers, Russell and Donald Sharner, her three children, Mark Vandertie and his wife Diana, Bruce Vandertie, and Laurie Yarrow, and her two grandchildren, Matthew and Renee Stephens, and Renee’s fiance Benjamin Haag. Carolyn Evelyn Sharner was born in 1933 in Beaver Township, Wisconsin to Gladys and Henry Sharner. It was on the train coming home from charm school in Milwaukee where she met her future husband, Ronald Dean Vandertie. When he asked her to join him for a drink in the next car, she politely declined as she could see that she would tower above him in her high heels. He then asked to sit with her and so began their courtship. They ran a number of businesses together including a family restaurant and motel on the way up to Door County, Wisconsin. They had three children, Mark Allen, Bruce Lee, and Laurie Ann. Later in life, Carol had the great pleasure of living with Laurie and her husband Bill in helping raise her two beloved grandchildren, Renee Carolyn and Matthew Carl, who referred to her as their Nanee. She would often say that those were some of the happiest years of her life. Upon moving to Colorado, Carol worked for Traveler’s Insurance as a typist and was able to retire 13 years later. She soon found herself tending to the immense number of plants at Marilyn Hickey Ministries in Greenwood Village. After a move to Loveland, Colorado, Carol had the privilege of being offered an apartment at Mirasol Senior Living. She soon had another "family” of dear friends, who would all look out for and love on each other. Saturday was always reserved for cards or Rummikub with her friends at the complex. Mom was also immediately drawn to the gardens and the "vine line” that ran the length of the complex. Armed with her trusty walker equipped with a box for clippings, a bag of gardening tools, and a variety of sun hats throughout the years, she would head towards the gardens regardless of 90+ degree heat or the chilling cold. It was there that she was at such peace. The gardens were her sanctuary and where she had countless conversations with the Lord. Carol’s quiet and unshakable faith was such an inspiration to her family and friends. Never one to say an unkind word, Mom was often the first person one would reach out to, whether it be needing a simple word of encouragement or advice or wanting to share some good news with. Her kids and grandkids would often joke that she had a direct line to God on her "bat phone.” From Mom’s voice to God’s ear. After leaving Wisconsin and heading to a new life with her children in Colorado, our great aunt Lydia stated, "Honey, we had an angel among us and never knew it.” But I think we knew that all along. Please join the family for a Celebration of Life to be held at Mirasol Event Center, 1153 Finch Place, Loveland 80537 on Saturday, January 11th at 11:00 a.m.  Carol’s obituary can be viewed online at Viegutfuneralhome.com.
