Frankfort – Donald E. Howard M.D., 87, husband of Mary Ann Hadden Howard, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2019. He was born on January 7, 1932 in Morehead, Kentucky, to the late Orville and Marie Barbour Howard. He was raised in Olive Hill, Kentucky. He attended Asbury University at the age of 15 and began medical school at the University of Louisville at the age of 19. After graduating from medical school in 1955, he completed an internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Following his internship, Don served two years in the US Army in Heidelberg, Germany, practicing medicine. Don and his wife Ann settled in Frankfort, Kentucky, in 1958 where he joined Dr. Harry Cowherd to practice family medicine for over 30 years. Don was an avid traveler and loved wildflowers, birdwatching, UK sports and bridge. He was also a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Frankfort. In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by his children, Daniel (Janice) Howard, Paducah, John (Nancy) Howard, Frankfort, and Janie (Steve) Edkins, Louisville; and his grandchildren, Sarah Howard, James Howard, Andrew Howard, Katie Howard, Annie Meyer, and Laura Edkins. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church General Fund. Special thanks are given to caregiver Rehonda Comings as well as the staff of the 3rd and 4th floors and ER staff at Frankfort Regional Medical Center for their kind and compassionate care.
