Edward Lester "E.L." Strange Jr., age 90 of Charleston, SC passed peacefully in the care and comfort of his four loving children on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at the VA Hospice facility in Hampton, VA. E.L. was born on September 9th, 1925 in a cabin just outside the little town of Oak Park, GA and was raised in Columbia, SC. He was the eldest son, of the late Edward Lester Strange Sr. and Gladys Mosely Strange. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the USS LST 991 as a Pharmacist Mate, Second Class. After serving his country, he returned to Columbia, SC where he met his beautiful wife to be, Patricia Ruth Holt at his restaurant Mammy's Shanty on Two Notch Rd. EL's passion for cooking remained throughout his life. They later moved to Charleston, SC and then to Folly Beach, SC where E.L. became well known in the restaurant business for many of his wonderful dishes. One of his many specialties was She Crab soup enjoyed by everyone, including celebrities such as Ernest Borgnine. E.L. was held in high esteem by his friends and fellow restauranteurs of Charleston, Folly Beach, and Columbia. E.L. was a devoted and loving father and family man, who was cherished by his children. He loved to cook, sing, and fish, garden and to be with the dogs he cared for throughout his life. He had a superb voice and sang to his children's delight right up until the day he left this world to reunite with his late wife and the love of his life, Patricia Holt Strange. E.L. is survived by his four children, Edward L. Strange III (Eddie), Melodye Strange Maiella, Candance Strange Datoc, and Joye Strange Patzer. He was dearly loved and will be forever missed by his brothers, Marvin and Howard Strange of Columbia, SC and his loving sister, Ruby Duke of Orangeburg, SC, as well as his son-in-law's; Chief Petty Officer Anthony Maiella (USN Retired), Master Chief Petty Officer Rene Datoc (USN Retired) and Dr. Patrick Patzer, all of Virginia. He was blessed by the love of his grandchildren; Michelle, Patricia, Daniel, Robert, Michael, Amy, Tess, Shanee, Anthony, Carley, and Brandon. Eleven great-grandchildren were an additional joy to E.L. E.L. was preceded in death by the love of his life, Patricia Holt Strange, his parents; and his youngest brother, Olin DeWitt Strange. Family and friends will remember and celebrate E.L. Strange Jr.'s life on Saturday, November 7th, 2 pm at Thompson Funeral Home, 200 State Street, in West Columbia SC, 29169 The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of the VA Hospice facility in Hampton, VA. Their dedication and effort to provide quality care during our father's last days were a blessing to the entire family. He spent his last days in peace overlooking the beautiful water of the Chesapeake Bay, listening to the birds sing and feeling the sunshine on his skin. All of which he dearly loved! We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him.
