Ernest Howard “Moose” Funtieo, age 45, of Moncks Corner, SC, formerly of Miami, FL, and Morgantown, WV, left us on August 23, 2024, so many years too soon.

Born on March 8, 1979, in Aliquippa, PA, to a single mother, he grew to be well-loved by a community that recognized his big heart and even bigger personality. From a young age, Moose had an innate ability to connect with people, making friends wherever he went and leaving a lasting impression on everyone who crossed his path.

Moose, as most everyone knew him, lived his life to the fullest. To those around him, he was both the cause and source of so much laughter, a bright light in a world that was often dark. He was fiercely committed to his friends and loved so strongly that even his powerful hugs were second in magnitude. He would travel hundreds of miles just to surprise you, he’d take time to stay by your side when you needed him, and he even officiated weddings for those who were close to him.

As those who knew him would attest, Moose would never pass up the opportunity for a good time. Years ago, he predicted his obituary would include this phrase: he knew better, but did it anyway. That was with good reason: his relentless pursuit of these life experiences provided ample joy (with a little mayhem sprinkled in) for himself and those around him.

Moose loved his family, his many friends, his Dodge Challenger and car club, and superheroes, especially Batman, joking that he himself was “The Very Dark Knight.”

Moose was a well-known DJ in Morgantown, WV, for many years before dedicating his career to serving as a Corrections Officer, most recently at FCI Williamsburg, where he was known for his steadfast commitment and strong sense of duty. Prior to this, he served at FCI Miami in Miami, FL, bringing the same level of professionalism and care to his role.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn, and several half-siblings.

Left to cherish their memories of Moose are his beloved wife, Lesbye “Lizzy” Funtieo; his sons, Ron Eaton, Draeden Taylor Funtieo, and Logan Funtieo; his chosen children, Marcos and Kiara Maturrell; and many dear friends.

There will be a celebration of Moose’s life at the FCI Williamsburg Training Center, located at 8301 US-521, Salters, SC, on September 10 at 10 AM. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring his memory. Please call 843-387-9409 or email [email protected] to confirm your attendance.
