Fred Appling was born on June 18, 1930. On Monday, September 12, 2016 Fred was admitted into ST Clare Hospital in Lakewood WA, and he died peacefully that evening. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Appling; father, Gus Appling; mother, Menthalee Appling; wife, Barbara Appling; and daughter, Alfreeda Appling. He is survived by his sister, Bessie Collins; brother, Joe Appling; daughters, Beverly Newman, Carles Appling, and Elizabeth Appling-Shreve. As a young man, Fred enlisted in the US Army and was shipped out for a tour of duty in the Korean Conflict. Upon his return to the States, while stationed in FT Smith AK, he met and married Barbara. Together they enjoyed his assignments in FT Bliss TX, Schofield Barracks HI, and FT Lewis WA. Fred served 21 years, with many accommodations, achieved the rank of Master Sergeant, retired and began another career in the Civil Service at Fulton Dental Clinic on FT Lewis. After an additional 20 years, Fred retired in 1995. He spent his next year’s gardening, reading, vacationing along the Oregon coast with his family, and being “Grandpa” to his seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Fred was a wonderful father and beloved grandfather. He is dearly missed.
