Gertrude J. Gunther
January 16th, 1918 - October 25th, 2017
Gertrude Gunther passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the age of 99. She was born January 16, 1918 in Jackson, California to her parents Alfred and Gertrude Podesta making her a third generation native Californian. She was preceded in death by her brother Alfred Podesta and her sister Lois Moran. Gertrude was a loving mother to her three children; Dennis Gunther (Nancy) of San Bruno, Kristine Gunther (James Whitesell) of Jackson, and Stephen Gunther (Virginia) of Rome, Georgia; beloved grandchildren, Monica van den Berg, Jack Gunther, Matthew McGhan, Peter Gunther, Daniel Gunther, Nancy Gunther, and John Gunther. Gertrude has eight wonderful great-grandchildren. Lynn Blennerhassett, Thomas Moran, Michael Podesta, Christopher Podesta, Natalie Podesta and Eric Kauschen were happy to call her Auntie. She retired from the Retail Clerks Union working many years for Safeway Stores in Jackson and at the Wheel Inn on North Main Street. In retirement she enjoyed being active in the Red Hat Ladies. She delighted in having her family join in many celebrations at her home in Jackson. Her family would like to thank her long-time devoted friend, Leona Devaney of Jackson, for all her help and support. The family also thanks Dr. Robert Hartman and Staff, Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties, Gold Quartz Inn Staff, and Father Colin Wen of Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic Church. A mass was held at St. Patrick's Church on Saturday, October 28th followed by interment in Jackson Catholic Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Gertrude's name to Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties, P.O. Box 595, Jackson, CA 95642.
