Gilbert Glenn Bennett
December 23rd, 1935 - January 18th, 2024
Gilbert G. Bennett, a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, loving father, and grandfather passed away in his home on January 18th. He was 88. Born in Flintville, Tennessee to Annie E. (Pepper) Bennett and Grover B. Bennett Gilbert attended high school at Fairview in Cullman Alabama. Serving in the Army for 29 years he gained the rank of Command Sergeant Major. CSM Bennett served overseas in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam as well as many stateside posts including Ft. Richardson Alaska. He retired at Ft. Meyer, Va. where he was Post CSM from 1979-1983. While there, he was a member of President Regan's Joint Chiefs of Staff. His many awards include the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. Following his retirement from the Army he started Gil Bennett Cabinet Co. which he operated until his final retirement in 1998. Much to his pride Gilbert's son, Kenneth, took over the cabinet shop and continues with his grandsons today. While stationed in Germany, Gilbert met and married his devoted wife, Emma, who he was happily married to for 53 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Emma; brother, Robert; and sister, Katherine. Together their memories are cherished by their son, Kenneth Bennett (wife Dawn), and 3 grandchildren, Westley, Madelynn, and Henry. Gilbert stayed active in retirement and was a Life Member of VFW Post 64, Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion and he attended Sandhills Community Church. Thompson Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209 has been entrusted with the arrangements. Family will visit with friends Wednesday, January 24th at 11:30 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 12:30 in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home. Following the service, Gilbert will be laid to rest with full military honors at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation in Gilbert's name.

Greenlawn Memorial Park is one of Columbia's most historic perpetual care cemeteries. This gorgeous setting combines serenity, natural beauty, and diligent care for generations of families. North Lake, located in the center of our park, offers a water feature and is the site of many local events, including an annual Easter sunrise service, a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. The park also has a veteran's section, private family estates, a columbarium with niches for cremated remains, and an incredible granite mausoleum....
