Hugh Dever Mahoney Sr. lost his life after a courageous year long battle with cancer on May 14, 2016, in Venice, Florida with his loving wife by his side. Hugh was 75. Born Sept. 22, 1940, in South Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Jeremiah E. and Mary J. (Lally) and was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward and Eugene, and sister, Marie Brumfield. Hugh graduated from Boston College in 1962 and entered the United States Marine Corps. Hugh proudly served as captain in the USMC until 1966. After leaving the Marine Corps, Hugh entered corporate life. He climbed the corporate ladder and moved to four different states, where he made wonderful friends and memories. He retired from M&M Mars in 2004 after 25 of years of service. Hugh was a lover of history and genealogy. In 2013, he and his wife ""Willie"" traveled back to his paternal grandmother's home of Cork, Ireland, where he searched and found his second cousin. The families were lost to each other for generations until Hugh's search. The connection based on Hugh's search has deepened to the next generation. Hugh's granddaughter, Josephine Migash, was able to connect with the long-lost relatives during a study abroad trip to Ireland last summer. Hugh's research and love of genealogy has helped foster new relationships with relatives who otherwise may have never connected. Hugh is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Wilma A. (Klein); and children, Liann T., of Mechanicsburg, Pa., wife of Richard Migash; Mary Colleen Mahoney of Lancaster, Pa.; and H. Dever Mahoney, Jr, of Phillipsburg, N.J., husband of Susan (Gotimer). His three granddaughters that were his pride and joy, Shaughnessy A. Migash, Josephine E. Migash and Catherine M. Mahoney also survive him. Hugh also is survived by his sisters, Trudy O'Keefe, of Bulter N.J., and Geraldine Killough, of Watertown, N.Y. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews, who will miss their ""Uncle Hughie"" as well as countless friends who will remember his jovial laughter, love of history and endless stories. Hugh educated all who came in contact with him. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 am on May 27, 2016 in the Epiphany Cathedral Catholic Church, Venice, FL. Friends and family will be invited at a later date to the burial of ashes at the Massachusetts National Military Cemetery in Bourne, Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation or to The Jimmy Fund.
