Janet Claire (Townsend) Hoag passed away in Seattle on May 23, 2016. Janet was born March 29, 1931 in Seattle, the eldest child of Floyd and Hazel (Rhodes) Townsend. She went to six different grade schools in Seattle and Sedro Woolley, ending with Haller Lake Elementary in the 7th grade. She moved on to Hamilton Junior High and then to Lincoln High School in Seattle where she was a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Pages from her high school scrapbook show that she went to many of the plays and concerts that Lincoln put on during her years there. She graduated from Lincoln High School in June of 1949 and entered the University of Washington in September of 1949. During her time at the UW, she took many business classes to prepare herself for a business career. She and her good friend Marilyn Storino were avid Husky Football fans going to many games over the years. Janet married E. Ross Hoag on June 12, 1953. They were married 46 years, until his death in 1999. She and Ross enjoyed boating and camping around the Sound, spending time with friends in Edmonds as well as their condominium in Hawaii. They raised several dogs during their marriage, including Lady, Rogue, Happy and Little Bit; the dogs even had their own station wagon for trips to the beach and post office. Janet and Ross shared many adventures over the 40 plus years they lived together in Edmonds, including many good times in the company of their dear friends, Harry and Janet Livingston. After Ross passed away in 1999, Janet spread his ashes and those of their beloved dogs in the waters near Sunset Beach in Edmonds, where Janet writes in a letter to her late husband, where we would look out over the water with our binoculars and admire the water and many sunsets.Janet loved to sing and loved show tune music. She frequently went to musicals and plays at the Edmonds Wade James Theater and around the region. She also loved going to Seattle Womens Chorus to see her nieces mother-in-law, Joan Giacomini, perform. She had many close friends over the years and kept in touch with some of her elementary school friends with luncheons and get-togethers. She also was a faithful keeper of all paper. Old maps; school work; all her papers from her classes at the University of Washington, records, bills, newspaper clippings and ads were all safe in her keeping. Her hobbies included sewing, needlework, gardening, and an occasional crochet piece.Janet had a long career working as a secretary at Prudential Insurance, Real Estate Investment Division, from 1956 to 1986. After a few years of retirement, she was bored and went to work at Northwest Youth Family Services from 1988 to 1993 as a recnist. She also became a tutor for students from the program. She survived breast cancer and participated in several Susan G. Komen walk-a-thons representing Faith Community Church. She proudly represented survivors in a fashion show fundraiser for breast cancer survivors at the downtown Seattle Bon Marche. Janet was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Hazel (Rhodes) Townsend, her husband E. Ross Hoag, her precious dogs, Lady, Rogue, Little Bit, and Happy; and her special rescued kitty friend, Miss Kitty.She is survived by her brother Terry Townsend, sister-in-law Barbara Townsend, nieces Erin (Townsend) Kohlenberg and Amy Townsend, grand-nephews Jacob, Max, Keegan and Cameron, step-son Kerry Gwinner and step-granddaughter Bethany and her three boys Britton, Beau and Draeden Ross. She lived a long fulfilled life and made many friends along the way from her school days, college days, work days and recently her friends from her assisted living homes and her delightful friends from Faith Community Church that also survive her and ensure that she will be remembered. Her memorial will be at Faith Community Church in Edmonds on June 22, 2016 at 3 p.m. She is interred at the Restlawn Cemetery in Edmonds, WA.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Northwest Parkinsons Foundation, The Arthritis Foundation Great West Region or American Cancer Society.
