Joanne “Jet” Malone, 77, a longtime resident of Falls Church, VA passed away peacefully on Friday, December 28, 2018 at the Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center in Arlington, VA. Born on June 20, 1941 in Baltimore, MD, Joanne later spent most of her adult life in Northern Virginia but always kept her Baltimore roots close to her heart. Joanne is predeceased by her parents, Milton and Geraldine Tankersley, and her husband, Warren Lee Malone. Survivors include her two children, Sean Malone of Gaithersburg, MD; Amy Malone-Spicer of Washington, DC; son-in-law, David Spicer, and cherished granddaughter, Lily of Washington, DC; longtime companion, Donald Weinberg of Oxon Hill, MD; siblings Milton Tankersley, Jr. of Bel Air, MD; Thomas Tankersley of Jefferson, MD; Patricia Bach of Catonsville, MD; and Richard Tankersley of Bel Air, MD; as well as her feline and canine grandpets: Ace, Snowball, and Elsa. Joanne was employed as an accountant at CCH Computax in Falls Church, VA. She was one of the first parents actively involved in setting up a parent group for deaf children at Mantua and Camelot, an active member of the Pine Spring Neighborhood Association, and a longtime board member/officer of the Fairfax County Park Authority. Joanne was very fond of spending time in her backyard, basking in the sun on Adirondack chairs on the deck she personally designed when she retired. She travelled extensively to various places abroad and in the States, with her family and friends. A warm, gregarious, person who enjoyed interacting with people from all walks of life, Joanne frequently welcomed friends, and her children’s friends to her home. A natural athlete, Joanne spent her entire youth partaking in sports such as basketball, field hockey, and continued to play softball through her mid-sixties. A Baltimore native, she regularly hosted crab and beer gatherings on hot summer days, on tables pulled together in the backyard with kids and dogs splashing nearby in a pool. All who were fortunate to know Joanne will miss her gentle warmth, sparkling sense of humor, and zest for life. Service is closed to immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Joanne’s name be made to the following charities: American Diabetes Association 2451 Crystal Drive Suite 900 Arlington, VA 22202 American Heart Association/American Stroke Association 4217 Park Place Court Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979 The family wishes to extend their innermost gratitude to the Hospice staff at the Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center for their unwavering support and care in Joanne’s final days.
