John Hosea Poole
May 4th, 1927 - December 1st, 2023
John Hosea Poole of Columbia, SC, passed away on December 1, 2023, at the age of 96. He was born in Banks County, GA, to Hosea Simon Poole and Minnie Bell Lawrence Poole. He was affectionately known as "Pop" or "Uncle John." He is survived by his son Ryan (Anita); grandchildren Blake (Katy) of Columbia, Haley of Easley, Aaron (Tobi), and Jenna all of Columbia; and great-grandson Camden. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, son Rick and grandson Nicholas. John retired from the military and civil service after a long and successful career where he earned many commendations. He was a talented craftsman who could do just about anything. He was the first one to get a call when someone needed help and he was always willing to help no matter the task. After retirement, he took to farming. He was often teased about his crooked rows and he would chuckle and say he could get more corn per acre this way. He loved family and preparing meals with food straight from his garden; talking Gamecock sports with his sons; playing Santa for his grandchildren and neighbors; and reading his Bible. He was an avid fisherman and loved a good fish fry with friends and family. For many years, he grew sugar cane and made cane syrup which he also loved to share. He had so many passages marked in his Bible. There was a clear theme of service, obedience, humility and love in the verses he underlined. Pop was a humble, kind man and leaves us a wonderful example of what it means to be a servant of the Lord. He will be greatly missed! A private service for immediate family will be held at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, Columbia SC.

We Entrusted John Poole's Care To
Greenlawn Memorial Park
Greenlawn Memorial Park is one of Columbia's most historic perpetual care cemeteries. This gorgeous setting combines serenity, natural beauty, and diligent care for generations of families. North Lake, located in the center of our park, offers a water feature and is the site of many local events, including an annual Easter sunrise service, a Greenlawn tradition for over 50 years. The park also has a veteran's section, private family estates, a columbarium with niches for cremated remains, and an incredible granite mausoleum....
