Juanita Ontiveros Moreno, 95 years old, was born June 12, 1920 in Swink, Colorado, and died peacefully in her home in Denver, Colorado on December 4, 2015. She was the daughter John Ontiveros and Pilar Ornelas Ontiveros of San Marcos in Durango, Mexico. She and her seven siblings grew up in Aurora, CO. Mrs. Moreno was a radiant beauty, a spitfire, a hard worker, and a self-proclaimed “farm girl.” She and her siblings started working at early ages, and worked in the kitchens and fields of other people’s farms. She left school after completing the 8th grade, as was the custom at the time. In 1941 she married Cecil J.G. Moreno, of North Denver, and moved to Denver. Soon left to care for two young children while her husband served in the Army overseas in WWII, she went back to school, earned her GED, and started working. She and her husband later moved the family to Cherry Creek. She worked at the Denver Dry Goods Co. in Cherry Creek where she spent years selling cosmetics and wrapping packages with an artist’s touch. She raised her three children, mothered other youngsters in the neighborhood, worked, and maintained her house as if cleanliness was next to godliness, and kept her family in clean clothes and fresh tortillas. Everyone was met at her door with old Mexico hospitality; no one escaped empty handed. She wanted her children and their children to have easier lives than she had, and was a strong advocate for education. She was unequivocal in her pride for all her children and grandchildren. In her final years, she suffered poor vision, dementia and severe scoliosis of the spine. She was cared for at home primarily by her youngest son, Anthony. She is survived by her three children Cecil Moreno of Anchorage, AK, Anthony Moreno of Denver, CO and Barbara Panagulis of Aurora, CO; her five grandchildren, Paul Moreno, Lisa Moreno, John Panagulis, Gabriel Moreno, and Matteus Moreno and Heloise (Ellie) Moreno, two of her sisters, Lucille Hernandez and Susan Stark, and her brother Joe Ontiveros. She was preceeded in death by her husband Cecil G. Moreno, her sister Mercy Tumbaga, and her brothers John and Savino Ontiveros.
