Judith Smith Martin Judith Smith Martin passed away peacefully at home on August 26th after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Judy was born in Charlotte on June 22, 1943, the daughter of Wayne Beveridge Smith and Lois Meacham Smith. She graduated from Myers Park High School and then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While at Chapel Hill, she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority, and it was at Carolina that she met her husband, Ned. They were married while he was in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, and she supported them through his last two years of medical school and his residency training at Duke University Medical College before they moved to Charlotte in 1972. Judy was active throughout her life in various different civic and social organizations. She served as a Deacon and a Stephens Minister at the Myers Park Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Junior League, the Mint Museum Auxiliary, the Women of Vision and served on the boards of the Family Center, and the Alzheimer's Association. She was a member of the Charlotte Assembly, the Carousel Dance Club, and a past co-president of the Germans Club. She was a member of the Nourish & Flourish Garden Club and the BLBC book club. She especially enjoyed her bridge games with several bridge groups and playing golf with her Chipper Chicks golf group. The quality of Judy's relationships defined her life. She was a devoted wife, an unconditionally loving mother, a cheerleader for her grandchildren, and a loyal and caring friend. She was fun as well as fun-loving. She was the queen of the dance floor with an unshakable faith. Judy truly lived life to its fullest, and she accepted her illness in the same spirit, making the most of every moment and embracing the end of her life with courage, dignity and grace. Judy's greatest joy was being with her friends and her family, and especially her grandchildren. She loved attending their birthday parties, their ball games, or any other special moments in their lives. The family beach trips with her children and grandchildren were truly the happiest times of her life. Judy is survived by her husband, Edward Stephens Martin, their two sons, Wes and his wife Anna of Charlotte, and Chris and his wife Camille of Athens Georgia; two brothers Wayne B. Smith, Jr., and Stephen E. Smith and his wife Tracy. She is also survived by six grandchildren, William Martin, Thomas Martin, Myers Martin, and Georgia Martin of Charlotte and Sophie Martin and Penny Martin of Athens, Georgia as well as many wonderful nephews and nieces whom she loved deeply. Her family would like to take this opportunity to thank all of her friends for their letters, emails, calls, and prayers which have sustained and supported Judy throughout her long and arduous journey. You will never know how much they meant to her and to us. A service to celebrate Judy's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Jane Summey Mullennix and the Reverend Steve Eason officiating. The family will receive friends in Oxford Hall following the memorial service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1901 Brunswick Ave. Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28207, Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, Avondale Presbyterian Church, 2821 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209 or any other charity of the donor's choosing.
