Olive Claire Schlaufman died Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Villas at Sunny Acres in Thornton. She was 91 and had fought Alzheimer’s disease for 15 years until it caused her death. Olive was born May 21, 1924, in Chicago, to Fred and Clara Dahl. After graduating from Kelvyn Park High School, she went to work at Western Electric in their huge Hawthorne Plant in Chicago, where she met Russell Schlaufman. They married on May 24, 1947. They lived in the city until 1953, then moved to Rolling Meadows, Ill., a brand-new community of tract houses on former farmlands northwest of the city. In the late 1950s they moved again with their four children to the nearby suburb of Arlington Heights. Olive went to work at the telephone company office to help make enough money to send their brood to college. In 1971 a new opportunity brought the family to Colorado. Western Electric offered Russ a transfer, with a job for Olive, to a new plant north of Denver on 120th Avenue. They lived in Northglenn until retiring at age 55 and then moved to Westminster. They kept busy and happy in retirement. Both of them volunteered for Northglenn Ambulance, and they worked part-time as fill-in managers for storage companies. Olive took classes at Front Range Community College, painted and crocheted. In their camper they visited the 48 contiguous states and Hawaii, missing only Alaska. They traveled to the Holy Land, and to most of the countries in Europe. They were active members of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Northglenn. Olive loved animals, loved to shop, adored her children and grandchildren, and was an expert on old movies and movie stars. Olive was a 27-year survivor of breast cancer, but Alzheimer’s disease, diagnosed in 2000, consumed too many years of her life. Most recently she lived at the memory care facility at The Villas at Sunny Acres in Thornton. Russ died in February 2012. Olive was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sister, Joan Stebbins of Haymarket, Va. Survivors include her four children: Susan Deans of Boulder, Charles Schlaufman (Margie) of Arvada, Nancy Quinonez (Will) of Thornton, and William Schlaufman (Marcy) of Monte Vista; seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Foss (Wendy) of Arvada, Scott Schlaufman of Arvada; Andrew, Adam and Alex Quinonez of Thornton, Savannah Schlaufman and Dylan Schlaufman of Alamosa; and two great-grandchildren, Daric and Alyvia Foss of Arvada. Also surviving is her sister, Doris Weege of South Elgin, Ill.
