Dr. Robert M. Shive, 81, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2015, surrounded by his family. Dr. Shive was born in Luebo, Belgian Congo, on November 2, 1933. He was the son of missionary parents, Alexander M. Shive Sr. and Jean Bell Shive. He attended Central School in Lubondi, Belgian Congo, and returned to the United States to graduate from Etowah High School in Etowah, North Carolina. He graduated from Davidson College and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill"s School of Medicine. He then completed his Residency at Medical College of Georgia in 1965. He returned to North Carolina and started his own psychiatric practice in Charlotte, which he continued until his retirement in 2006. Bob also volunteered at the Charlotte Rescue Mission. Despite his visual impairment, Bob lived an amazingly active life and full life. He was an avid fisherman, accomplished potter and cook. He also enjoyed spending time in his garden, particularly creating one full of fragrance, kayaking with his children and grandchildren, and traveling to fulfill his thirst for knowledge. He was a master conversationalist and loved to engage with others. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and friends. Affectionately known as Doc or Doctor Bob, he enjoyed being the surrogate grandfather for the entire congregation of Matthews Orthodox Presbyterian Church where he was an active member. He is survived by siblings; Eugenia Setser and Phillip A. Shive and his children: Cynthia, wife of Gerald S. Rogers, Robert M. Shive Jr., husband of Karen, Christopher N. Shive, Phillip A. Shive, husband of Valerie, Jonathan B. Shive; his grandchildren: Josh and Tyler Rogers, Jessica (Graydon), Zachary, Jordan, and Kelsey Shive, and Delaney and Sarah Shive. Additionally, he is survived by his beloved guide dog, Otto. He was preceded in death by his wife Alma and brother Sandy. A visitation will be held Monday, January 19, 2015 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service, 1937 N Sharon Amity Rd., Charlotte, NC 28205, a memorial service will follow at 12:00 pm at Matthews OPC, 2701 Rice Road Matthews, NC 28105.
