Robert Raymond Shofner, age 78 of Brookston, passed away peacefully at his home on July 11, 2020 surrounded by family celebrating Bob and Sharon's 61st wedding anniversary. Robert "Bob" Shofner was born July 25, 1941 in Pengilly, MN. He attended Greenway High School, and left to begin his family, marrying Sharon Cline on July 11, 1959. He was a logger, owned his own salvage business, and worked in the MAHanna mines before becoming an independent truck driver with the handle "Midnight Rider" in 1969, which he continued to do until retiring in 1994. He was also Constable of Brookston in the early 1980's. He and Sharon shared their compassion for others by fostering many adults with disabilities for the past 30 years. Robert was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. His greatest joy next to trucking was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to spruce up his vehicles with lights and chrome, and was often found in the summer painting and caulking structures to make sure they were ready for another Minnesota winter. His meticulous nature was passed on to many of his family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lillian Shofner; his younger brother, Thomas; infant brother, Errol; infant twin siblings; brothers-in-law, Ben LaDoux, Jerome Polzin, David Miller and Pete Cline, and sister-in-law, Patricia Allen. Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon Shofner; children, Denise (Ken) Colemer, Robert "Bobby" Shofner, Laurie (Kieth) Olson, and Timothy Shofner; current foster family members, Jean and Brian; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren with one more due in March; siblings, Jean Miller, Bon Polzin, Leona LaDoux, Shirley (Dan) Noland and Henry (Amy) Shofner; sister-in-law, Gayle Cline; brothers-in-law, Larry (Ione) Cline and John Cline; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Fresenius Kidney Care in Cloquet and Essentia Health for their excellent care, with a special thank you to the nurses. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. in Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet. Masks and social distancing will be required. Cards and letters of condolence may be sent to the family c/o Atkins-Northland Funeral Home.
