Roy was born in Eureka Kansas, but his early life was spent travelling between Texas & New Mexico as his father was a tool dresser on an oil rig. A move to Illinois resulted in meeting his eventual wife, Betty Carnahan, in high school, whom he dated briefly. They reconnected in college and were married after graduation. After graduation from the University of Illinois with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Roy had a varied career. His first job was District Engineer for California Edison Company. He became Chairman of the Illuminating Engineering Society. He was then hired by Sylvania Lighting Division as a District Engineer. This required a move to Massachusetts. He was promoted to District Manager. This required another move, to Colorado, to increase the sales force productivity. Tired of working for others, in 1993 Roy started his own business, Electro Sales, as a manufacturing rep for lighting products. He worked on many interesting lighting jobs such as the State of Colorado Capitol dome and the Keystone night skiing area. As cities began to want more interesting street lighting, Electro Sales started selling antique vintage lighting from Littleton to Grand Junction; Ouray to Denver . Cities now had an interesting choice. After retirement, he finally could commit ample time to his passion of organic gardening. There were multiple vacation jaunts scheduled around plantings and harvests. One of the most memorable was a trip back to his roots in Texas and the oil fields.
