Thomas Andrew Shealy, Jr., passed away, Friday, January 22, 2010. He was born in Macon, GA on January 30, 1918, the son of Thomas Andrew and Eunice Shealy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Anne Garnett Shealy of Chelmsford, MA; two sons, Thomas Andrew Shealy III and his wife, Heidi of Stratham, NH, and Douglas Alan Shealy and his wife, Diane of Rowley, MA; four grandchildren, Thomas Andrew Shealy IV of Chelsea, MA, Stacy Allison Shealy of Bethesda, MD, Andrew Douglas Shealy of Brighton, MA, and Gregory Alan Shealy of Rowley, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, William P. Shealy and one sister Betty Shealy Robison.He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1939 and his master's degree in 1940 from Emory University where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity and four honorary fraternities: Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Epsilon Upsilon, Phi Sigma Iota and Kappa Phi Kappa. From 1940-1942, he studied for his PhD in modern languages at Johns Hopkins Univeristy. When the United States entered World War II, he volunteered for duty and entered the U.S. Army in 1942 as a private. Shortly thereafter, he was sent to cryptologic school and Officer Candidate School at Fort Monmouth where he graduated in November 1942. He was assigned to Vint Hill Farms Station in December 1942 where he remained until 1946 as an instructor in cryptanalysis. When he was discharged in 1946, he had risen to the rank of captain. He remained in the Army Reserve for the next 26 years and attained the rank of colonel. He received additional education in French and Spanish from 1947-1948 at Willamette University in Salem, OR and in Russian at Dickinson University in Carlisle, PA from 1949-1950. During his civilian service, he was a cryptanalyst and became the technical consultant for U.S. Army Security Agency Training Center at Fort Devens, MA. He received more than 25 citations and letters of appreciation including the two highest civil service awards for exceptional service and outstanding service. While living in Chelmsford, MA, he was a member and president of the Educational Advisory Committee for Chelmsford Schools for eight years. He was a member of the Eau Gallie Rotary Club and the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Florida, and Vesper Country Club in Massachusetts. Mr. and Mrs. Shealy enjoyed dividing their time between Chelmsford and Indialantic, FL for many years. Private Services will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
