Bill Mangham, who melded a sensitive and creative nature with deep analytic and technical skills, died August 1, 2015, at his home with loved ones and music surrounding him. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer. He was 64 years old. Bill was a business analyst and project lead in manufacturing logistics for more than 15 years for Titanium Metals Corp., traveling from his home in Golden, Colo., to offices around the U.S. and in the U.K. At home, he was a guitarist and singer in bands that played jazz, blues, folk and rock music, and was a devoted member of Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden. Church positions he held ranged from the choir to the finance officer of the board, and at the denominational level he was co-chair of the Unitarian Universalist Association’s President’s Council. “We have lost a wise and gentle soul,” the Rev. Peter Morales, Association president, said when he heard that Bill had died. Before becoming denominational president, Morales had been Bill’s minister at the Golden church. When Bill learned of his illness he and his wife of 22 years, Bev LaDuke, committed to meeting it with courage, humor, dignity and grace. It is commonly said that people battle cancer, and Bill did – he underwent difficult surgery and tried an immunotherapy clinical trial. The four touchstones were his focus every day. They guided him when he learned that despite the treatments the cancer continued to progress; rather than undergo significantly more toxic chemotherapy, he elected home hospice care. The aim, as he put it in a blog he kept about the illness, was “quality of remaining life over possibly increased longevity.” He continued to enjoy music, and to work, until the last week of his life. William Eugene Mangham was born September 14, 1950, in Montgomery, Ala. His father was in the Air Force, and transfers led the family to Colorado. Bill graduated from Cherry Creek High School in Aurora and entered the Air Force Academy. He decided against a military career and received a computer science degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He began his career with IBM and it progressed through other firms until he found Titanium Metals Corp. When Bill’s spiritual quest led him to Unitarian Universalism his life took new directions. He had, for years, played guitar as a private hobby, but others in the church persuaded him to join in playing with them. This led to membership in several bands, including Loosely Assembled and the EverHopefuls, with a key role on three CDs. He also taught advanced guitar at Forte Music Education in Denver. He and Bev enjoyed travel and visited the U.K., France, Belgium, New Zealand, and Mexico. After recovering from surgery for his cancer, they took an automobile tour of music history in the American South – New Orleans, Cajun country, and the Blues Trail through the Mississippi Delta. In addition to his wife, who is a realtor in Golden, his survivors include his son Eric, of Denver; a sister, Jan Hagan of Aurora, Colo., and a brother, Mike Mangham of Lakewood, Colo. His first marriage was to Jan Jackson. In lieu of flowers, Bill suggested donations to the Mangham Memorial Fund, which will support the music ministry at Jefferson Unitarian Church, http://tinyurl.com/Mangham.
