Shelly Renae Spafford

Jul 22, 1980 — Jun 30, 2026

With joyful hearts, we celebrate that Shelly Spafford went home to be with her Heavenly Father and was reunited with her daddy on June 30, 2026.

Shelly was born in Montrose, Colorado, in 1980 to Jerry and Nona Smith. She spent her childhood there until 1992, when her family moved to Idaho. Though the transition was difficult at first, new friendships and frequent trips to the mall soon made Idaho feel like home. Shelly was affectionately known as Jerry and Nona's "wild child"—full of determination, spirit, and a personality that kept life interesting.

At age 15, Shelly was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, beginning a journey that would shape not only her life but the lives of countless others. Though she experienced seasons of grief and heartache, she chose to live with remarkable faith and grace. She often shared that, despite the pain of her illness, she was grateful because it drew her closer to God and gave her opportunities to lead others to Him.

In 1995, Shelly met the man who would become her husband, though she dated his best friend first. She eventually convinced Ben to take her out and, true to her adventurous spirit, tried to impress him by ordering the biggest hamburger on Westside's menu—only to regret it afterward. Ben got his revenge on their second date by taking her mudding and "accidentally" driving into a puddle deep enough to stall his truck. What Shelly didn't know was that it wouldn't start again until it dried out. They fell in love in that muddy puddle, married in June 2000, and later that year welcomed their beloved daughter, Sadie. Ben faithfully cared for Shelly through every challenge, and together they shared a marriage marked by unwavering love, devotion, and grace.

Sadie was Shelly's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. They loved crafting, singing, and watching The Office and Supernatural together. Through her mother's example, Sadie learned to love all living things, find gratitude in every season, and live with purpose even through times of hardship.

Shelly found joy in God's creation, especially the wildlife in her backyard. She delighted in feeding squirrels and ducks by hand, loved reading God's Word, and had a remarkable gift for writing stories that inspired others. She also enjoyed scrapbooking and creating meaningful crafts, especially while preserving memories of Sadie.

Above all, Shelly loved the Lord. She saw His goodness in creation, in people, and in everyday moments. Even during her darkest days, she chose joy. Through her faith, her gratitude, and her ministry on social media, she encouraged countless people to draw closer to God and trust Him regardless of life's circumstances.

Shelly was preceded in death by her father, Jerry Smith; her grandparents, Don and Joann Smith and Bud and Sylvia Mullendore, Virginia Smith; and several beloved pets who held a special place in her heart.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Ben; her daughter, Sadie Spafford (Ivan); her mother, Nona Smith; her sister, Angie Mittleider (Grae); her niece, Trew Mittleider Campbell (Luke); her nephews, Jaegar and Karston Mittleider; her aunts and uncles, Don Smith, Tom and Brenda Smith, Clint and Cally Mullendore, and Corky Mullendore; her step-grandmother, Eileen Smith; and many cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who became family.

Shelly's life was a testimony of faith, perseverance, and joy. Though her earthly journey was marked by hardship, she showed everyone around her what it means to trust God with unwavering hope, live with gratitude, and love deeply. Her legacy will continue in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
