Gilbert Warford Munguia Jr.
January 11, 1941 — July 17, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Gilbert “Gil” W. Munguia Jr., a devoted family man, cherished friend, and beloved member of the community. Gil passed away on July 17, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, surrounded by family, friends, and an abundance of love. He was 84.
Born in Tucson on January 11, 1941, and affectionately known as “Hibbie” by his family and childhood friends, Gil lived a life rooted in love, laughter, and service to others. Over the course of nearly five decades, he built lasting relationships in the produce industry, known not only for his work ethic but also for his kindness, generosity, and warm sense of humor.
He began his career in 1961, working with his father-in-law, George Ice, before eventually starting his own company. Gil’s professional life was defined by dedication and integrity, and he retired in 2009 after 48 years of service.
Gil also gave back to his community in meaningful ways. He was a founding member of P.A.I.N. (Produce and Allied Industries of Nogales), a non-profit established in 1977 with fellow industry leaders. Together, they raised funds to support local children and, in time, focused their efforts on the Santa Cruz County Boys and Girls Club. Gil remained a driving force in this organization for more than 36 years, and it remains active today—one of his many enduring legacies.
Those who knew Gil will remember his heartfelt hugs, contagious laughter, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. His deep faith guided his life, and his legacy of compassion, sincerity, and joy will live on through the countless lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Munguia; his parents, Gilbert and Nellie Munguia; and his sister, Judy George. He is survived by his children, Gil Munguia and Debbie Bencomo; grandchildren, Gil Munguia, Briana Munguia, Isabela Munguia, George Munguia, Randy Robbins, Josh Robbins, Danny Robbins, and Anthony Vega-Bencomo; great-grandchildren, Maverick Munguia, Gigi Munguia, Jayden Robbins, and Juliana Robbins; siblings, Gloria Martin and Larry Munguia; and many friends who will miss his joyful spirit.
Gil leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend—and his memory will live on in the lives he touched so deeply.
