Raymond Burkard

June 25, 1926 — December 23, 2016

Raymond Braun Burkard, son of Jacob R. Burkard and Anna Katharine Braun was born in Stratton, CO on June 25, 1926. He passed away on December 23, 2016 at Centennial Health Care Center in Greeley. Raymond was one of three children, Rose Burkard Klein, and Laura Burkard. His parents were both born in Walter, Volga, Russia and immigrated to America. He was raised on a farm near Kirk, Colorado where he graduated from high school in 1944. Raymond was a member of Germans from Russia. He enlisted in the Army at Fort Logan, Colorado. He served as a Sharpshooter M1 Rifle in the 82nd Field Artillery Battalion in Okinawa. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Raymond was married to Betty Ray Sloniker on September 15, 1951 at the Zion Evangelical Church in Kirk, Colorado. Their marriage was blessed by one daughter, Penny Ray Burkard. They farmed in the Kirk area until his health failed and he sold the family farm and moved to Fort Morgan. He is survived by his loving daughter, Penny Ray Burkard; his niece, Sharon Klien of Peoria, Illinois; cousins, Sandra Mundell and Roger Magg; and many cousins of Colorado, Washington, and Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2011; his father, Jacob in 1965, his mother, Anna in 1984; sisters, Rose Klein in 1978 and Laura Burkard in 1989. A Celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017 at the Adamson Chapel, officiated by Reverend Curtis Hill of Colorado Springs. He will be laid to rest at Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley. Friends may leave condolences at adamsoncares.com.
