Louis Tornavacca
February 10, 1931 — June 5, 2025
Louis (Lou) Tornavacca passed peacefully on 6/5/2025. Lou was born in Loyalhanna, PA February 10, 1931 to Vincent and Maria (Piazza) Tornavacca. Lou never knew his father as he was killed in a coal mining accident prior to Lou’s birth. Lou’s mother was born in Piemonte, Italy and made her way to the United States as a young woman. Lou attended Latrobe High School, excelling in academics and sports. He was an exceptional football and baseball player and graduated as Valedictorian for the Class of 1949. He enjoyed sharing his alma mater with high school classmates Arnold Palmer and Fred Rogers – both of whom graduated 2 years prior to Lou.
Shortly after high school, in 1951 Lou was drafted into the United States Air Force. He served 4 years spending time in both Korea and Japan. In 1955 Louis was honorably discharged and began his career search. He saw an advertisement from the United States Department of State seeking Foreign Service Officers. Shortly thereafter he was hired and began his initial training in Washington, DC. Upon completion, Lou was transferred to his first duty location in Bonn, Germany. While working in Bonn, Lou met the love of his life Waltraud (Wally) Triesch. They were married September 3, 1960. Following his assignment in Germany, Lou’s career took him to Tel Aviv, Israel where his oldest son Mark was born, then Bucharest, Romania, followed by Brussels, Belgium. Lou and Wally’s second son was born while the family lived in Brussels. Following Brussels, Lou then served his country in Nairobi, Kenya, Dakar, Senegal, Vienna, Austria, East Berlin, Germany, Rome, Italy and Frankfurt, Germany before settling back in the United States in Washington, DC. Of interest while Lou was assigned to the US Embassy in East Berlin, his son had to pass through Checkpoint Charlie daily to attend the American school in West Berlin. Lou retired from the Foreign Service in 1987.
Following retirement and after a short stint in Miami, Florida, Lou missed the Washington, DC area and returned to his adopted home of Falls Church, VA. He obtained employment as a contractor and returned to the US Department of State, ultimately retiring (again) in 2000.
In his retirement years, Lou enjoyed spending time with family and dear friends, visiting his children and grandchildren, serving on the board for his condominium association, reading, attending weekly Italian Club meetings, spending time with his beloved cat Jack, and watching his Pittsburgh Steelers whenever he had the chance. Lou enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and was loved by all he came in contact with.
Lou is survived by his wife of 65 years Wally, Sons Mark Tornavacca and Lee Tornavacca-Triesch, Daughter-in-Law Susan Triesch, and 3 grandchildren – Max, Alexis and Bailey.
Lou will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in his honor to the Knights of Columbus. https://www.kofc.org/en/what-we-do/charity/index.html#charity-tabs
