Peter G. Murphy
d. Jun 22, 2017
It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Peter G. Murphy on June 22, 2017. A beloved son, brother, and friend, Peter will be greatly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him. Peter was born on 26 November, 1965, in Bonn, Germany, to Edward and Patricia Murphy. A stand-out student, athlete and friend, he graduated from Berlin American High School in 1984. Pete attended the University of Notre Dame on an ROTC scholarship, and upon his graduation in 1988, received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. After four years in the Army, including participation in the First Gulf War, Peter transitioned to civilian life, building a successful career in the petroleum transfer and storage industry, first at GATX and then Kinder Morgan, where he most recently served as Bay Area Operations Manager.
An intelligent, thoughtful, and caring person, Peter enriched those around him with a lively wit, an infectious sense of humor, and no shortage of opinions on issues regardless of their importance. Peter loved to read, travel, listen to music, drink a pint, and spend time with family and friends, and if he could travel to spend time with his friends while listening to music and drinking a beer all the better. A natural leader, Peter made and kept friends easily, and would do anything for members of his “extended” family.
Peter is survived by his parents, Edward and Patricia Murphy, his sisters Ann and Kate and their husbands Joe and Frank, his brothers Tim and Paul and their wives Susan and Terri, six nieces and nephews, countless friends from across the country and around the world, and a voluminous collection of the music he loved most.
A viewing for Peter Murphy will be held on 14 July from 4 – 8 PM at the Advent Funeral Home in Falls Church, Virginia, and a Funeral Service on 15 July at 10AM at our Lady Queen of Peace in Arlington, Virginia, followed by a reception. An inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
