Susan McCloud
October 24, 1940 — May 16, 2026
Susan McCloud passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, in Alexandria, Virginia, with her daughters Kathy McCloud and Terry Alexander by her side.
Born on October 24, 1940, Susan lived a life marked by intelligence, kindness, faith, and deep devotion to her family. She earned a degree in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University and was among the first generation of women to build careers in computer science. She worked at NASA and later at Unisys, contributing to important projects throughout her career.
More than her professional accomplishments, Susan will be remembered for the love and care she gave to those around her. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and knitting. One of her greatest joys was creating handmade blankets for every baby in her extended family, each one a lasting expression of her warmth and generosity.
Susan was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and, for many years, St. Thomas a Becket Catholic Church, where she generously volunteered her time.
She cherished her relationships with her siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She is survived by her children, Kathy McCloud; Terry Alexander and her husband, Bill; and Mike McCloud and his wife, Jaime; and by her grandchildren, Jonathan, Matthew, Oscar, and Sera. She is also survived by her sisters, brother, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and George McGrann.
Susan will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose intelligence was matched by her gentle spirit and generous heart. Her love and example will remain with all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Parking information is available here: Blessed Sacrament Parking Information.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Susan’s memory.
