Samuel James Gabriel

January 14, 1938 — June 21, 2025

Samuel "Sam" James Gabriel was born on January 14, 1938, in Miami, Florida, as the eldest of nine children. He dedicated his life to service and family, leaving a legacy of love and strength.

In 1955, Sam graduated from Brooker T.. Washington in Miami, FL. On July 6, 1955, Sam enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served with honor for nearly 28 years. His exemplary service earned him numerous accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Military Education Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1983.

Sam was passionate about sports, especially track and field, and loved spending Sundays cheering for his favorite teams, the Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers. He also enjoyed golfing on Wednesdays, though his friends sometimes teased him about his dedication. An avid bowler, he participated in several leagues in Littleton, Colorado. Sam treasured the moments he spent taking his grandchildren on camping trips, where he imparted valuable life skills and served as the steadfast backbone of his family.

In 1958, Sam married Shirley, and together they had five children, Twins – Sharon and Sheila, Sherry, Steven, and ShirRay. He expanded his family in 1983 by becoming a father to Travis. In 1996, he met and married Dina M. Clark, further enriching their families and creating lasting bonds.

Sam is reunited in spirit with his mother, Bertha Smith; daughters Sharon and ShirRay; son Steven; brothers Irvin and Peter; and sister Yvonne.

He is survived by his daughters Shelia and Sherry, and son Travis, along with his bonus children, Kendal and Billy. Sam also leaves behind a loving legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers Mark and George, sisters Winifred, Patricia, and Brenda, and a host of family and friends who will cherish his memory.

A memorial service for Samuel is on 7/29/2025 at 11:30 am at Fort Logan Cemetery.
