Zachary (Zak) Thomas
July 4, 1980 — June 5, 2026
Zachary (Zak) Thomas passed away peacefully on June 5th, 2026, surrounded by family, friends, and an abundance of love. Though cancer overshadowed the last three and a half years of his life, it never defined him. He continued to live with purpose, humor, determination, and gratitude, filling his remaining years with the people and experiences he cherished most.
First and foremost, Zak was a devoted father. He approached parenthood with patience, wisdom, and grace, always putting his son’s well-being first. He built a relationship grounded in trust and respect, becoming the person his son could turn to with any question, concern, or dream. One of Zak’s greatest goals was to see his son graduate from high school. He achieved that goal and, just a few weeks later, left this world with a full heart.
Zak’s life was shaped by adventure. As a young man, he moved to Durango, Colorado, to be a ski bum, only to discover a lifelong love of the mountains and the people who called them home. Along the way, he was many things: a rafting guide, skier, fine-dining manager, landscape artist, home inspector, and lifelong explorer. Whether skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, enjoying a great meal, or sharing a craft cocktail or beer with friends, he found joy in every season of life.
On Valentine’s Day 2020, Zak met Jill, who would later become his wife. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, resilience, and gratitude for life’s simple joys. Even after his cancer diagnosis, they celebrated a wedding, enjoyed countless ski days, shared homemade meals with family and friends, and spent many peaceful evenings together on their back porch.
Zak loved his family fiercely. Though miles often separated them, he remained deeply connected to his parents and brothers, never missing an opportunity to check in, share a story, or offer support. His home was always open, his table always welcoming, and his generosity extended far beyond his immediate family.
Those who knew Zak will remember his thoughtful nature and steady presence. He found satisfaction in making lists, setting goals, and creating order from chaos. He loved cooking for Jill and Avry, reading when sleep evaded him, and planning the next adventure. Until life made other plans, Zak was always making plans of his own.
Above all, Zak loved deeply, laughed often, cared generously, and embraced life with curiosity and determination. His impact on those who knew and loved him will endure for years to come.
Zak is survived by his son, Avry Thomas; his wife, Jill (Davis) Thomas; his parents, Kathy and Dave Thomas; his brother Matthew Thomas and wife Diana, and their sons Jeremiyah and Isaac; and his brother Joshua Thomas and child, Alex. He also leaves behind countless friends and extended family members whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and friendship.
Celebrations of Zak’s life will be held in the coming year in Durango, Colorado; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Family and friends are invited to gather in the places that meant so much to him, to share stories, raise a glass, and celebrate a life well lived.
