Larry Myers
November 11, 1944 — July 29, 2019
Larry Myers, 74, of Northglenn passed away peacefully following a meaningful week of home hospice care with visits and messages that rallied his spirits after a decade of rigorous health challenges.
Larry dearly loved his Colorado home of over fifty years, though his roots were in South Dakota. Raised in Wessington Springs, SD, he was a big man of deep integrity. An innate leader with an enormous presence, Larry whistled his way through Dakota Wesleyan University–except when playing basketball, a skill that earned him both a full scholarship and a place in their Hall of Fame. After earning his teaching degree in 1966, he taught, coached, and served in the Air Force before earning a Master of School Administration and becoming a middle school Assistant Principal in Adams County School District 12. His 30 years as an educator at South Huron Junior High School, Pecos Junior High School, and Niver Creek Middle School ensured Larry’s positive influence on thousands of students, and he helped countless kids with his firm but fair approach and quality mentorship.
Larry’s heart guided everything he did, and he valued everyone he met. Above all, Larry cherished his family. Marrying Marji (Wagner) Myers in 1966, they shared 53 years together and raised two spirited daughters, Debby Myers Bower and Jody Myers. He reveled in the company of his son-in-law, Shane Bower, and grandchildren, Myah and Eric Bower. Countless trips nourished the love and connections Larry prized with his greater family of three sisters (Gloria & Gene Fastnacht, Laura & Jim Sletten, and Mary Burnison), three sisters-in-law (Kate & Luke Landin, Barb & Bruce Cutler, and Deb & Jack Billion), his now deceased parents (Lawrence and Vera Myers) and in-laws (Bob and Frances Wagner), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
As a man of many passions, Larry nurtured dear friendships and relished all outdoor adventures – especially hunting and fishing in Colorado, South Dakota, and Canada. He took pride in woodworking, and adored the competitive fun of basketball, baseball, and golf. Larry was known for his willingness to help, preparedness, determination, generosity, ability to turn anything into a game, pursuit of diverse projects, wonderful laugh, and being true to his word.
As his health deteriorated, Larry adjusted and kept going without complaint. He applied his trademark ingenuity to make modifications and continue enjoying his passions. Wonderful doctors and Marji’s partnership and caregiving gave him added years of life, for which we are most thankful. Larry will be dearly missed and happily remembered as a stalwart man of rare character. We will celebrate his adventures and recognize our loss at 3pm on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at Northglenn United Methodist Church with a reception to follow.
