Alice was a woman who loved life and loved her family very much. She married Severin Froland in July of 1957. Thus all the children started happening. To many peoples amazement, 7 of them.
While caring for her 7 children, Alice went back to school and obtained her GED at the age of 37. What a great accomplishment! She always believed that education was the key to accomplishing anything in life.
Alice not only loved her family, but above most, she loved the Lord, Jesus Christ. She was an active member of the Gospel Mission Church in Monico, WI. She loved singing and playing piano at church. She was faithful in bringing her children to church or on the occasion when she could not attend, made sure that they had a ride there. Rev. R. Littleton was the man who led Alice to the Lord as an adult and remained her pastor until her move to Colorado.
One of the passions Alice had was music. She loved Gospel music, but the Happy Goodman Family was her favorite. At times of trouble, the music would play. Sadness, joy, any time of the day, Gospel music. She also loved classic country music as well. Marty Robbins, Mel Tillis and Loretta Lynn, just to name a few.
Alice was a woman of many talents. She made and decorated many beautiful cakes. She could bake anything as a matter of fact. She decorated a wedding cake for every single one of her children. Many people that knew her would ask her to decorate a cake for them for any given occasion.
She was a seamstress, did crocheting, cooking, upholstery, flower arranging, and making & designing Christmas decorations as Christmas was her favorite holiday. She always made sure that every grandchild had a new ornament every year for their tree. She also participated in the Stunt Night Talent show at the Elcho High School. She even taught herself to play piano. All of her many talents were self-taught. Many of her talents have been passed on to each of her children.
Alice was also very patriotic. She honored and respected any person who served and serves this country starting with her father Alvin, brothers, Harry and James, right down to her children and grandchildren. She also wrote poems and articles about her brother, PFC Harry Hipke who died in the Vietnam War in 1965. Alice wrote a tribute to Harry in which her daughter, Dawn, used for Forensics in High School, where she took 1st place at the state level.
One of the other passions she had was gardening and berry picking. We would say "I think she would fight a bear for a berry." As the children grew up they were required to pick berries to be made into jam to enjoy when those long Wisconsin winters came around. She would tell the children that is would be a taste of summer in the middle of winter. She also put up her own pickles, and vegetables that were grown.
As for what time she had for watching movies or tv, it was Elvis Presley. You know they shared the same day of birth. January 8th, just different years. In her later years she would tell us she was marrying Elvis and going to "Blue Hawia". What a joy. She passed this passion down to children and grandchildren also. The word "Elvis" says it all.
And last but not least, her love of anything Native American. She loved the history, the color and culture, music and movies of the Native Americans. I think that was one of the reasons she moved here to Colorado some 31 years ago. She would read book upon book of anything Native American. She was always attending Native American Pow Wows and the Red Nativity. She so loved exploring many cultures.
She also held many jobs over the course of her life. Waitressing, jeweler for Sarah Coventry, managed an apartment complex, nurses aide, cook, and personal cake decorating business.
And now as she has gone on to meet the Lord, we are greatly saddened but in the same breath we can rejoice knowing where Alice is. I am sure she is singing in that great choir in front of our Heavenly Father. We cannot even imagine what she is seeing now. We know that she is with the loved ones who have gone on before her. We also have great comfort in knowing that we will be seeing her soon as we await the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
