Lloyd Edward Thomas
October 12, 1931 — May 19, 2026
Col.(ret.) Lloyd E. Thomas, 94, left us to join his beloved bride Doris, on May 19, 2026. He passed peacefully in his sleep in what he always called “her house”. After she passed, he said there were three things he wanted to happen. He wanted his freedom, he wanted his independence, and he wanted to die in her house. He accomplished all three.
Preceded by his wife of 65 years, Doris, Lloyd is survived by his son, Daryl Thomas, and wife, Mary, his daughter, Denise, and his two grandsons, Cameron Harper and Brandon Harper.
Born in Washington, D.C., Lloyd spent his youth between winters in the city and summers in the nearby country, spending time with his grandparents. Later, he graduated with honors from Howard University, where he excelled academically (degree in chemistry), athletically (basketball), and in extracurricular activities (leadership in both ROTC and Greek life). His time in ROTC led him to decide to pursue a career in the military, even though he had initially planned to become a doctor. While his time at Howard was successful, he would state that the most important thing that happened was that he met the love of his life (Doris) in an anatomy class. He would go on to marry her and earn a commission in the Air Force right after graduation
The next 30+ years were a whirlwind of events, including his successful marriage, two children, several dogs, multiple locations, and constant progression in the Air Force. This progression continued until he landed in Colorado Springs, where he completed his final assignment in the Air Force and retired as a full-bird colonel.
Upon retiring, he transitioned to enjoying the wonders of Colorado even more, including golf at the Broadmoor, hunting and fishing in the mountains, and Saturday football games at the Air Force Academy. When he left the state, he could be found on a cruise ship with Doris, at a PGA golf tournament somewhere in the country, or visiting family.
For the rest of his time, he could be found participating, leading, and mentoring the brothers of his long-enjoyed membership in the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. He was an active member for over 70 years from the time he pledged the fraternity while still at Howard University.
A memorial service will be held at All Veterans Funeral and Cremation Services in Colorado Springs on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Lloyd’s name to either the Wounded Warrior Project or the Alzheimer’s Association.
