Michael James Long
September 15, 1938 — March 29, 2026
Michael James Long, born September 15, 1938, in Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away after a life marked by dedication, craftsmanship, a deep devotion for his family, and appreciation for the outdoors. He was the son of Loretta and James Long.
Mike grew up on the wide plains of South Dakota and graduated from Fairburn High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy. It was during his naval service that he discovered a lifelong passion, photography.
Following his military service, Mike married Phyllis Balaberda, and together they welcomed two children, Mitchell and Stephanie. In 1963, he began his 25-year career with the Boeing Airplane Company, where he worked as a photographer and project director.
Mike enjoyed a lifelong love of nature. Fishing, hiking, and camping were among his favorite pastimes, and he found peace and joy in the quiet beauty of the outdoors.
In 1987, Mike married Ann Goff, expanding his family with her two children, Stacie and Scott. He embraced his role in their blended family with warmth and devotion.
Mike is survived by his four children, Mitchell, Stephanie, Stacie, Scott, along with eight grandchildren: McKella, Jordan, Billie, Aimee, Adam, and Alex. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren: Mia, JJ, and Novella.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his dedication to his work, and his love of nature. His legacy lives on in the family who loved him and the memories they will carry forward.
