Martha Christine Lair

Jan 31, 1944 — Oct 2, 2024

Martha Christine Lair (née Bahmiller), born on January 31, 1944, in St. Petersburg, Florida, completed her earthly journey on October 2, 2024, in Largo, Florida. She gracefully embraced 80 years of life, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unwavering strength that continues to inspire those who knew her.

As a young girl, she was a dutiful daughter, working the front counter of her family's bakery, Bahmiller's Bakery in St. Petersburg. She never had a complaint or negative thing to say, as she left that for her siblings to do. After high school, Martha earned a scholarship to Rollins College where she received a Bachelor's Degree in music. Martha pursued her passion for music as she taught elementary students the wonder and fundamentals. Martha’s career evolved from an enthusiastic elementary music teacher to a dedicated third-grade instructor, where she retired, leaving an indelible mark on her students' lives. When they visited their cabin in Georgia, Martha and Fred attended Tallulah Falls United Methodist Church. Her performances on the piano and the pipe organ captivated many church congregations, where her musical talent was nothing short of mesmerizing. Her love for playing the piano remained a lifelong passion.

Martha was much more than an exceptional educator and musician. She was the "Tender Flower" of her siblings, a nickname that embodied her gentle, compassionate nature. Her kindness knew no bounds as she played important roles in the nurturing of her family, always ready to assist and uplift. Her siblings and family remember her fondly as a wonderful wife, a doting aunt, and a beloved sister, characteristics that shined brightly in every aspect of her life.

Martha's nurturing spirit was shared with her devoted husband of 52 years, Fred Lair, and her extended family, including siblings David Bahmiller, Mary (John) Heine, and Paul (Mary)  Bahmiller, nieces, Becky (James) Quarles and Ann (David) Poisson, and nephew,  Mark (Meredith) Quarles as well as four great nephews, Luke, Jonathan, Ethan, and Elliott.  She joins her parents, Carl and Ruth Bahmiller,  siblings Ruthie Quarles and Jonathan Bahmiller, and nephew Danny Bahmiller in eternal rest.

Her life will be celebrated at a graveside service on Saturday, October 12, at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Memory Gardens in St. Petersburg, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Martha's honor to Tallulah Falls United Methodist Church in Lakemont, Georgia, a testimony to her lifelong commitment to community and music.

Martha Christine Lair will be forever remembered for her compassionate nature, strength, intelligence and the harmonious contributions she made to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
