John Samuel Murray
Jul 14, 1942 — Apr 12, 2026
John Samuel Murray passed away on April 12, 2026 at the age of 83. Known to many as “Big John”, he was a man of strength, service, and deep love for his family.
Born on July 14, 1942, in Horsepen, Virginia, John lived a full and meaningful life. He was an honest man who believed in duty, hard work, and taking care of the people he loved. Those qualities shaped the way he lived and the way he will be remembered.
Big John proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Army, including time in Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. He went on to serve as a Deputy with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, continuing a life built on courage, discipline, and dedication. He was also a business owner and entrepreneur, someone who understood the value of perseverance and hard work.
But more than any title or accomplishment, Big John was a devoted husband and he loved his family. He shared 49 years of marriage with his wife, Lilly Murray, a true example of love, loyalty, and partnership. He was a proud father to Marion Murray and her husband Peter Raithel, Joanna Murray and her husband Robert Rodriguez, and John Murray II.
Big John loved to play his guitar, listen to oldies and classic country music, and watch old westerns on tv. He enjoyed golf, especially in his retirement years. He also had a special love for his cats, Ebby and Lucy.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Opal Offenbacher and James Murray, and his brothers James Murray and Jack Murray. He leaves behind his older sister, Jane Murray Singer, sister-in-law, Donna Sue Murray as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Big John will be deeply missed and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
May he rest in peace.
