Stephen Ronald Toth
November 13, 1938 — April 10, 2026
Stephen Ronald Toth (Steve), 87, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Carteret, New Jersey, Steve was proud of his Hungarian heritage—Hungarian was his first language. It was in Carteret that he met the love of his life, Roberta (née Malwitz). Together they shared 65 years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, commitment, and family.
Throughout his life, Steve lived in several places, raising his family in Schenectady, New York, and Piscataway, New Jersey, before settling in Oldsmar, Florida.
Steve served in the United States Air Force as a Radar Technician, an experience that reflected his mechanical inclinations. From an early age, he had a natural talent for working with his hands, especially when it came to rebuilding cars or anything mechanical or electrical. As a teenager, he worked alongside his dad and uncle, learning these skills. Tinkering, building, and fixing things was a lifelong passion.
He went on to build a distinguished career as a computer engineer for Control Data for 35 years, working on mainframes and minicomputers well before the dawn of the personal computer revolution. He was very proud of his accomplishments in this field. Afterward, he continued his work as a consultant with Maximus and Amdahl, where his expertise was highly valued.
Steve had a deep appreciation for music (especially Jazz and the Italian Opera Tenors) and art (his favorite was Salvador Dali). He was an avid fan of science fiction films and enjoyed spending time sailing on his boat, “The Free Spirit.” He also loved cooking his Sunday Omelets, “S.O.S.” sandwiches, homemade crab cakes, or grouper on the grill.
Steve will be remembered for his steady presence, his intelligence, and the quiet kindness he showed to everyone around him. His generous soul, playful spirit, and funny disposition will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Roberta, and their loving children: Douglas Toth and wife Jacqueline, from Hillsborough, NJ; Pamela Epifano and husband Robert, from Bridgewater, NJ; and Sandra Anderson and husband John, from Clearwater, FL. He also leaves behind five grandsons, one granddaughter, four great-grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Beau. Steve was predeceased by his granddaughter Victoria in 2018 and his brother Robert in 2020.
A private Memorial service and Celebration of Life will be planned in NJ for family and friends at a later date.
