Listen to Obituary

McMullen, Walter, 78 of Gulfport, passed away June 21, 2026 at Highlands Lake Center with Good Shepherd Hospice. Born in Washington, DC., his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale in the 1950’s. Walter is preceded in death by his father, Ellis McMullen, his mother, Alice Paterson, brothers, Jack and Carl McMullen. Walter is survived by his sons, Bryan Lucas and Duffy Lucas both of California, sisters, Janet Harrell (Ken) and Patricia Timmons (Todd) and several nieces.

Walter worked as a training jockey with horses in his late teens and early 20’s, he worked in construction for a while and was a very detailed craftsman. Later in his 40’s he was in telecommunications and was very successful with his business. It was during this time that Walter bought a sailboat and became the Captain of his own ship. He and his late ex Jenny, traveled through the Caribbean and beyond. He traveled all over the world, and loved every minute. Walter began losing his vision in his 50’s and began working with Southeastern Guide Dogs. He trained puppies and fostered the breeders. He eventually adopted 2 of the puppies he raised to become breeders and had one foster fail. Walter also loved Pinellas Lighthouse for the Blind. He found them to offer many resources and help those with a vision impairment. Although Walter was “labeled” as legally blind, Walter was incredibly independent. He lived life to the fullest, growing gardens that overflowed with vegetables and fruit, raising dogs, and still managed to lend a hand or an ear to every single person that came to him for help. Walter was also part of NA, he celebrated 40 years in December of 2025 of sobriety. This program saved his life and he dedicated himself to the program and to helping others.

The Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, August 15th between the hours of 4pm - 7pm at Pilgrim Church 6315 Central Ave., St Petersburg, FL 33710
