Laurie Ann Johnson Smith

December 11, 1961 — December 25, 2024

Laurie Ann Johnson Smith, MSN, FNP-BC, passed away in the early morning hours of December 25, 2024.  Born in Pensacola, Florida on December 11, 1961, and adopted by Helen and Norman Johnson, Col., USAF, Laurie’s early years were spent in Alabama, Maryland, Rome (Italy), California, and New Mexico.  She graduated in 1979 from Fountain Valley High School in California and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of New Mexico in 1983.  Laurie’s early career in nursing was spent in Albuquerque, New Mexico before moving to Tucson, Arizona in 1985 to take a position in the Intensive Care Unit at Tucson General Hospital, and then, training Nurses’ Aides at the Pima County Community College Skills Center.  In 1993, Laurie earned a Master of Science at the University of Arizona and became a Family Nurse Practitioner.  She was awarded the Mary Opal Wolanin Thesis Award for her study of vulnerable populations in 1994.  Laurie devoted her entire career to both helping patients and teaching others to compassionately care for the sick within the ever-changing landscape of the healthcare system.  She was unfailingly supportive, patient, and kind to her friends, colleagues, and those under her care.  Laurie was always generous with the gifts of her time, knowledge, and friendship, especially with new providers who she often mentored. In May 1991 she married Paul Smith.  Laurie’s passions were reading, particularly mysteries, art museums, fashion, and travel, especially international explorations.  All told, she visited museums and sites in at least two dozen countries and made it to Antarctica.  Painting, piano, and knitting were among her hobbies, and she truly enjoyed being with her large contingent of close friends.  All will dearly miss her.  Laurie is survived by her husband, sister Julie, niece and nephews - Jennifer, Justin, and Jeremy Nunz.  A memorial service celebrating Laurie’s life will be held at Angel Valley Funeral Home at 2545 N. Tucson Blvd., Tucson AZ 85716 on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10 am.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pima County Library (https://www.library.pima.gov) are most in line with Laurie’s love of books and reading.
