Howard Marlin Burkhart Jr. 1955 -2026

Howard, known to many as “H.M.”, was born August 21st,1955 in Denver, Colorado, and passed away July 10th,2026, in St. Joesph, Michigan unexpectedly. He was a man who lived life with humor, generosity, and an unwavering dedication to the things and people he loved.

Howard was the cherished son of the late Howard and Maroline Burkhart, and he now joins them in peaceful repose. He is remembered with love and admiration by his family, Ru and Gary Nitta, Nicholas Burkhart, Teresa Burkhart, Dottie Burkhart, Karen Sowa and Chris Smith.

After growing up in Denver, Howard served his country honorably in the Air Force from 1975 to 1979. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career as a boiler inspector, dedicating over 45 years to his profession. His career began with Hartford Steam Boiler and concluded with OneCIS/BV&I, where his expertise, integrity, and engaging manner left a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.

Howard’s love for steam locomotives was an enormous aspect of his life. He spent over 10 years of weekends as a Locomotive Engineer and Fireman at the Georgetown Loop Railroad. His love for trains extended to his personal life where he was an avid model railroader, acquiring an extensive collection. He loved to travel and enjoyed spending time taking road trips to tour military history museums and ships with his kids.

Howard was a man of humor and generosity, always ready to lend a helping hand. His dedication to his work was matched only by his love for family and friends. His engaging personality and selfless nature endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In accordance with the family's wishes, a service will be held in August 2026, in Arvada, Colorado, to honor Howard's life and legacy. As his family poignantly expressed, "The engineer has pulled into the station for the last time."

As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we celebrate the life and legacy of Howard Burkhart Jr, whose journey has left an indelible mark on the world. May his memory be a guiding light for those who continue to love him.
