Evelyn Orr
December 15, 1913 — February 14, 2009
Evelyn Prichard Orr, 95, one of the first licensed and certified school psychologists in Tennessee, passed away peacefully at the Autumn House on Saturday, February 14, 2009.
Mrs. Orr was born December 15, 1913, to Joe and Katherine Prichard in Lebanon, TN. She graduated from Ocoee High School in Orange County, FL in 1931.
She received her BA degree from Cumberland U in 1936, where she played basketball and was selected as “Miss Cumberland” in her senior year. She was awarded her MA degree in educational psychology from the U of Chattanooga.
Evelyn married James Calvin Orr on June 1, 1937. They adopted two children Nancy and Jon making their home in Chattanooga until the children completed their education. After James death in 1985 Evelyn moved to Cocoa Beach to be near her daughter and grand children.
She was preceded in death by her husband James C. Orr, son Jon B. Orr, brother J.W. (Bill) Prichard, and her sister Bettye Kate Hall.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy Orr (Bill) Schwarze of Cape Canaveral, FL; grandchildren Kathy Winkler (Ralph) Hoskins of Cadillac, MI; John B. (Kelly) Winkler of Nashville, TN; four great grandchildren Renee and Andrew Hoskins and Skyler and Taylor Winkler; sister Estelle (Jimmy) Jewell of Lebanon, TN; and sister-in-law Vanesse (James) Rowe, of Bolton, CT.
In 1993, she received Cumberland University’s Phoenix Award in Lebanon, TN for outstanding service to others. Mrs. Orr was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma among other professional and honorary associations.
As a member of the White Oak Methodist Church, she taught Sunday school for many years as well as directing many church programs. She moved her membership to the First United Methodist Church of Cocoa Beach, FL when she moved to Florida in 1985.
Mrs. Orr traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Her hobbies included knitting, crafts, and reading.
She was known for her warm, loving smile and will be missed by all of us who knew her.
A memorial service for Florida friends and family will be held at the Beckman Williamson Funeral Home in Cocoa Beach, FL on February 20, 2009 at 2 pm. Additional funeral services will be held in Tennessee at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Association, Autumn House, Viera, FL, or the Hospice of Health First in Melbourne, FL..
