Biography
She was preceded in death by her husband, M. W. Van Ormer, September 5, 1996. Gail Gubbins Van Ormer, 84, of Cocoa Beach, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, peacefully at home after a courageous battle with illness.
She was born on Sept. 12, 1924, in Albion, IL, the daughter of Thomas William Gubbins and Alberta Florence Barringer.
A resident of Cocoa Beach since 1961, she taught at Freedom 7 Elementary in Cocoa Beach and later became its principal. She also served as principal at Golfview Elementary in Rockledge, retiring in 1986.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Cocoa Beach Friends of the Library, Seaside Piecemakers, The Scribblers and the Cocoa Beach Writers Group.
She was a member of the Cocoa Beach First United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed traveling, painting, music, quilting and writing. Children were her special joy in life in both her family and her career.
Her survivors include her brothers, Vinton, Gordon and Kenneth Gubbins; her children, Christine Van Ormer, Kathy Van Ormer, Kelly Pelzman (Mark), Kirk Van Ormer and Kara Wells (Pat); grandchildren, Charlotte and Tom Fernee, Mikel Pelzman, Michelle Rhodes (Ryan), Chris (Tasha), Ryan and Matthew Van Ormer and Dalton and Ethan Wells; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Health First.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home, Cocoa Beach.
