George Scarpate

Biography George F. Scarpate George F. Scarpate. 91, of Melbourne (Suntree), Florida and formally of Arendtsville, PA was called home to the Father on July 2, 2010. Mr. Scarpate was born on January 25, 1919 in Brooklyn, New York, son of the late George and Marie (Konecsni) Scarpate. He attended school in Queens, N.Y. and Rutgers University, N.J. George was employed for 32 years as a financial officer with the Department of the Army at Raritan Arsenal, Fords, N.J and Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, PA. After his Federal retirement, George was employed by the Arendtsville National Bank. George was very active in his church and community. He was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Gettysburg, PA where for many years he served as a lector. He also attended Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne, Florida. His civic involvement included the Upper Adams School Board, Gettysburg Elks, Gettysburg Moose, Arendtsville Lions Club (Charter Member), Arendtsville Fire Company, and Boy Scouts of America. For many years he served as Arendtsville Borough Treasurer. Mr. Scarpate is survived by his wife of 65 years, M. Louise (Tappen) Scarpate and two children, Jerry Scarpate of Melbourne (Suntree), Florida; and Jill (Scarpate) Cramer and husband, Frank, of York, PA. He is survived by four grandsons: Jason Scarpate and wife, Lindsay, of Valdosta, GA; Major (Dr.) Jeremy Scarpate and wife, Melissa, of Melbourne (Suntree), FL; Brian Cramer of York, PA; and Steven Cramer of West Chester, PA. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Julia Catherine, Caroline, and John. Additionally, George is survived by two sisters, Marie (Ralph) Winkler of Toms River, N.J, Jeanne Cocoras of Queens, N.Y., a sister-in-law, Doris (William) Kermes of Gettysburg, PA plus numerous nieces and nephews in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Texas and Alaska. He was predeceased by a brother, Gerard (Bertha) Scarpati; sister, Pauline (Edward) Gearity; and daughter-in-law, Laura Scarpate. George was a loving husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, father-in-law, grandfather, and a friend to many. Throughout his life he embraced these roles and reveled in the relationships. George’s family and friends will miss him deeply, but will also celebrate the fact that he touched so many in such a meaningful and lasting way. Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Celebration of George’s Life and Goodness will be held on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 10:30 A.M at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 22 W. High St., in Gettysburg with Father Bernardo Pistone, celebrant. Interment will be at 12:30 P.M. in Fairview Cemetery, Arendtsville following the Mass. Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home in Viera, FL and Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA are handling the funeral arrangements. The family would like to extend a special thank you and express their appreciation to Autumn House and Wuesthoff Hospice in FL for the wonderful care they provided.
