John Joseph Gallagher, Sr., 84, of Viera, died peacefully on March 22, 2012. John was born on July 20, 1927 in Boston, MA and raised in the nearby towns of Stoughton and Sharon, MA. He enlisted in the US Army in 1945, with tours of duty in both Korea and Vietnam where he received decorations for his service.. During his military career John was stationed in Germany, the Far East and numerous locations in the United States before his active duty retirement in 1972 at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Aberdeen, Maryland. After retirement, John continued his work with the US Army as a Housing Inspector at both the Aberdeen Proving Ground and the Edgewood Arsenal until 1994 when John and his wife Alice moved to Viera. John was a life-long New England sports fan and could often be found watching a Red Sox baseball game or a Patriots football game on a Sunday afternoon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Alice; daughter Kathleen A. Nadeau of Hadlyme, CT; son John J. Gallagher, Jr. and his partner Timothy J. Millbern of St. Augustine, FL; granddaughter Jennifer L. McKenna and her husband Jerry of Boston, MA; grandson, William J. Nadeau, Jr. and his wife Janelle and great granddaughter, Josephine, 9 months old of Madison, CT. John was a beloved husband, devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be missed by all that knew him, especially his family who will carry his memory in their hearts and prayers forever. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 27, between 11am-12pm with the family and a catholic memorial service will immediately follow at the Beckham-Williamson Funeral Home, 5400 Village Drive, Viera, FL. 32955. Interment will be at the National Veteran’s Cemetery in Bourne, MA with full military honors at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations may be made to Viera Hospice in Johns’ memory.
