Ruth Muth Cornish, 96, a long time resident of Sodus, died peacefully at home on Merritt Island, FL November 7th, 2009. The daughter of Alfred and Margaret Muth, Ruth was born in Big Run, Pennsylvania on January 12th, 1913. She had 3 older siblings; Joseph, Mary Esther (Essie), and Elizabeth (Lib), who all predeceased Ruth. The family moved to Elmira, NY when Ruth was 4 years old. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Elmira College in 1934 and later earned a Master's degree from Albany State Teacher's College in 1937. Her majors were Latin and French, which she taught for 32 years. Ruth was an exceptional teacher, and many of her students maintained friendships with her throughout her life. Ruth met Gordon Cornish while both were teaching in South Byron, New York. They were married in Elmira on September 20th, 1942 and spent the next 50 years traveling the world by air, ship, bus, and auto until Gordon's death in 1994. Ruth is survived by Sister in Law Leona Richards, (Naples), Brother in Law Frank Cornish (Bentleyville, Pa) and many nieces, nephews and friends. She will be greatly missed by the many lives she so positively touched. A memorial service will be held at Courtney Springs Village ""The Commons"", Merritt Island, FL on Wednesday, November 18th at 3 PM. Internment will be held at a future date in Naples, New York.
