Earl Eugene Daily

February 10, 1928 — October 15, 2014

Earl Eugene Daily was born in Seattle on February 10, 1928 to Blanche and John Daily. In addition to his brother Leo and sisters Shirley and Delores, his family also included two stepbrothers, one stepsister and twins John and June, who died in infancy. Captain Daily is survived by his wife Constance, his daughter Cindy (Jeff), his son Patrick (Ardith), and granddaughters Renee (James), Shannon, Chelsea, and Christy (Patrick). Growing up on Magnolia, he attended school at St. Margarets, ODea and Queen Anne High School, and was an altar boy at his church. He held a variety of jobs as a young man, but it was at sea where he found his calling. He was a merchant marine for many years before hiring on at Chevron, where he worked his way up the ladder on an oil tanker, eventually becoming a captain. He held this job until his retirement, although he spent his off time acquiring licenses to work the local ferry routes. Earl met his wife Constance while she was attending Queen Anne High School, although they were both seeing other people at the time. They reconnected a few years later and got married in 1955 and honeymooned in Disneyland shortly after it opened. Their 59 wedding anniversary was one week before Earls death. In 1957, his daughter Cindy was born and her brother Patrick arrived in 1959. His children in turn gave him four of his greatest blessings: granddaughters Renee, Shannon, Chelsea and Christy. In the summer of 2001, shortly after moving from north Seattle to Edmonds, Earl suffered a stroke and never fully regained his speech. He also lost a lot of movement in his right arm and hand, but because he had learned and enjoyed the European manner of using utensils during his many travels, feeding himself was never a problem. Other than his family, his greatest loves were football and dogs. He was an avid fan of both the Washington Huskies and Seattle Seahawks, and much of his casual wardrobe showed his support. In his lifetime, he saw both teams win the big one, with Washington winning the national championship in 1991 and the Seattle Seahawks giving him the greatest gift a fan could ask for: a Super Bowl victory this past year. He was not able to attend any games after his stroke, but he never missed a minute when his teams were on television. Steinmetz, Mrs. Ellsworth, Dee Dee, DDT (Dee Dee Two), PJ Killer Bear, Alice, Spencer, Beeps, Gracie, Tracee and Lucie were just some of the dogs Earl shared his life with. Any family gathering would find him near the resident dog, where in spite of many protests, he still gave them little treats off his plate. Earl suffered a mild heart attack in June of this year, and the rest of his days were spent at Foss Home, where he received loving and compassionate care until he passed away on October 15, 2014 holding hands with his wife, right up to the end.
