After graduating from High School, Margaret attended Warburg College in Waverly Iowa. Margaret graduated with Bachelor in Home Economics. She later attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, where she earned her master’s degree in Speech Pathology. While attending the University of Iowa, Margaret met Darrell Eugene Haugen, and they married on July 25, 1959, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly Iowa.
A devoted wife and mother, Margaret loved to serve her family and others. She was active in her church and served in the choir, attended Bible studies, helped with events, and was always willing to help cook and clean as needed. She also enjoyed helping with many of the local elections and working part time at Hickory Farms during the holidays.
