"South Hadley, Evelyn H. Gray, 91 died peacefully at her home on Monday, September 5. She was born in Boston, MA on June 28, 1925, to Adam and Nellie Holowenko. Evelyn was a graduate of Regis College and later obtained her Masters Degree in Education. She worked in retail before becoming a teacher and later a school counselor. In 1951, she married the love of her life, Lt. Col.Clayton J. Gray, to whom she was married for 40 years until his death in 1991. Serving in the military took them all over the world, from Japan to North Carolina. Upon Clayton's retirement, they settled in New London, NH, where she resided for more than 30 years. Evie relocated to South Hadley in 2006 to be closer to her family. She was an accomplished painter and avid golfer. She will be forever remembered for her thoughtfulness, kindness, generosity, and creativity. She will be deeply missed by her son, Dr. Bradford Gray and his wife Dr. Marjory R. Gray, formerly of S. Hadley, now of Portsmouth, RI, along with their son Ryan. Six nieces and four nephews also survive her. She was predeceased by her four siblings. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate care provided to Evie for years by Christine Seibert. Calling hours will be on Saturday, September 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton St., followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
