Mary Evelyn Meyer
March 11, 1916 — August 27, 2014
Evelyn Meyer, age 98, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, in the home she designed and loved in Capitola. She was born in San Francisco on March 11, 1916 to John DeCuir and Francis Kolb DeCuir.
Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was a young child. After graduating high school, she worked as a bookkeeper at her father's doughnut shop. It was while she was on a lunch break on Valentine's Day 1935 that she met her beloved husband Bernard Peter Meyer. They married in 1937 and settled in Pico Rivera, CA, where their four children grew up. In 1970 they retired to Capitola.
Evelyn surrounded herself with family and friends. Her house always hummed with activity, had the fragrant aroma of freshly baked cookies, and was filled with laughter and love. She had many talents: artist; technical illustrator; classical pianist; baker; cook; designer; seamstress; and gardener. She was a devote Catholic and belonged to St. Josephs Parrish since moving to Capitola.
Evelyn had a full heart and generous spirit. She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Meyer, and her son, Richard Meyer. Evelyn is survived by her sister, Doris Simko, her daughter, Joanne Hester, who loving cared for her during the last 9 years, her daughter Marilyn Peacock, her son, Michael Meyer, and his wife, Donna, her daughter-in-law, Marcia Meyer, 13 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family wants to thank Hospice and Evelyn's devoted caregivers: Jane; Esper; Rosa; Sheila; and Rholyn for helping her though her end of life process.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 11:00 am, at St. Josephs Catholic Community, 435 Monterey Ave, Capitola.
Evelyn requested that donations in her memory be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County, 940 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, CA 95066.
