Irene Grzyb, 83, of Kitty Lane, Rensselaer, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, April 19, 2008 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in East Greenbush.
She was born in Amsterdam, June 30, 1924 a daughter of the late James and Sally Saldis Karutis. Irene grew up and attended schools in Amsterdam. In her earlier years, she worked for the former Mohawk Trust Bank and Larabee's Department Store in Amsterdam. She also worked for General Electric in Schenectady for a brief time. She married Richard Grzyb at St. Casimir's Church on June 14, 1947. He predeceased her in 1985.
Irene and her husband, Richard, relocated to Hudson, NY following their marriage, where Richard obtained a job teaching in the Hudson School District, eventually settling in Claverack, NY. Irene was a very loving home maker who devoted herself to her family. She very much enjoyed spending time traveling with her husband and best-friend, Richard, spending many vacations in Maine and the Adirondacks.
Her loving family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Michael Mahoney of East Greenbush, her grandsons, Sean and Reed Mahoney of East Greenbush, her sister, Sally Piliponis of Philadelphia, PA, and two sisters-in-law, Frances Karutis of Pompano Beach, FL and Ruth Karutis of Amsterdam. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Irene was predeceased by two brothers, Ben and Robert Karutis, and a sister, Vivian Karutis.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at St. Casimir's Church, East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY with Fr. Pascal Iannotti officiating. Interment will follow the Mass in St. Casimir's Cemetery, Amsterdam. Contributions in Irene's memory may be made to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144, or to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.
