Knute V. Show

Captain Knute V. (Schou) Show, 93, of Smith Street, Canajoharie, NY died peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at his home with his devoted wife by his side. Born in Ronne, Denmark on April 26, 1921 he was the son of the late Captain Knud A. Schou and Gudron Pedersen Schou. Following graduation from high school, Captain Show sailed as a deck boy on schooners in the Baltic Trade from 1928 to 1939. From 1939- 1941 he served aboard the Danish Training Ship Danmark as a cadet. At the time of the German invasion of Denmark in April of 1940, the Training Ship Danmark was on an official visit in Jacksonville, Florida and was interned there. Consequently, Captain Show sailed as an Able Seaman and Quartermaster for the Marin Transport Company, Sinclair Refining Company and the Agwilines Incorporated. On June 16, 1944 he was appointed First Officer with the Army Transport Service in the European Theater of Operations. On December 20, 1945 he was transferred to the Pacific Theater of Operations and served in various officer positions until 1949. In the ensuing years the U.S. Army Transport Service, later designated the Military Sea Transportation Service, and presently the Military Sealift Command, Captain Show was appointed to various officer positions. On November 8, 1973 the USS Neptune was transferred from the United States Navy to the Military Sealift Command. Captain Show assumed command of the Neptune and later the USNS Pawcatuck until his retirement. Knute came from a long line of mariners. His late grandfather, Captain Andreas Schou had his own fleet of massed cargo carrying vessels. His father sailed as master for the Maersk Line of Copenhagen, and later as a Baltic Sea Pilot and Harbor Master. Knute's brother, Captain Paul Schou, also sailed as master for the East Asiatic Co. in Denmark. Above all, Knute was a true gentleman who loved life and the sea. He was a member of the Fort Rensselaer Club and The VanAlstyne Homestead. He was a 50 year, Golden Life member of the U.S. Naval Institute; a member of the Council of American Master Mariners; and a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. He is survived by his wife; Eileen Paluzzi Show of Canajoharie; and several cousins. Knute was predeceased by his parents and his brother. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 3:30p.m. at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego Street, Canajoharie with the Rev. Zachary Labagh presiding. Calling hours will be held prior to the service beginning at 1p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place at a later date in St. Peter's & Paul's Cemetery, Canajoharie, NY.
