Bobby W. Moreland

1936 — 2026

Bobby Wayne Moreland, 89, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. Born on June 29, 1936, in Calhoun City, Mississippi, Bobby lived a life marked by service, dedication, and love for his family and community.

Bobby graduated from the University of Arizona in 1973 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Public Administration. A proud Wildcat, he embraced the university’s motto “Bear Down” throughout his life.

His commitment to service began early when he enlisted in the United States Army in March 1957. He served as an Electronic Countermeasures Specialist until his honorable discharge in March 1963 at the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). For his exemplary service, Bobby was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal with device.

Following his military career, Bobby dedicated himself to public safety. He joined the Tucson Police Department in March of 1963 and served with distinction for 21 years, retiring as a Sergeant. His passion for protecting and serving others continued when he became the Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police for South Tucson, where he served for an additional decade.

Bobby is survived by his children: Bryce Moreland; Diane Moreland Johnson (Greg); Tristan Moreland (Rachel); Jana Moreland Aguirre; and Robyn Moreland (Judy). He also leaves behind his brother Charles Moreland (Barbara) and 14 cherished grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents J.Z. and Jessie Moreland; his brothers Hugh Moreland and Jerry Moreland; and their loyal fur baby Lucy.

Bobby was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Dawn Moreland (Hollinger), with whom he shared a lifetime of love and adventure. Together they traveled across the country visiting family and friends or cheering on their favorite Arizona Wildcats teams, including women’s softball and basketball as well as men’s basketball and football. Their shared enthusiasm for life left an indelible mark on all who knew them.

Known for his warm smile and generous spirit, Bobby had a unique ability to make friends wherever he went. His wife Dawn, had to follow for an extra hour at Costco so he could shake hands and catch up with everyone he saw there. He was deeply loved and respected by all who had the privilege of knowing him, a testament to the kindness and care he extended to everyone around him.

May Bobby Wayne Moreland’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and loved him and serve as a reminder of a life well-lived in service to others.
